Doctor of Social Work

The Doctor of Social Work (DSW) is an academic degree for experienced social work practitioners who wish to further their careers by gaining training in advanced practice, research and/or policy analysis. Much of the course work emphasizes qualitiative and quantitative analysis methods. The degree typically leads to teaching, research, leadership roles in agencies, or self-employed social work practice. The DSW has become less popular in the past several decades, as most of the top ranked Schools of Social Work now offer only Ph.D. research programs in social work.
Currently, the Council on Social Work Education does not accredit DSW or Ph.D. programs. It only accredits Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work programs.
