Doddagaddavalli is a village in India. It is located near Hassan in Karnataka and lies on the route of Belur and Halebidu.
Lakshmi temple
Doddagaddavalli is home to the Lakshmi temple built during the Hoysala rule in southern India. It is less known than either of its sister temples in Belur and Halebidu. It was one of the earliest temple built in Hoysala style. It is said to have been built by a merchant called Kullahana Rahuta and his wife Sahaja Devi in 1114 A.D during the reign of King Vishnuvardhana.The main garbagriha of this temple has the presiding goddess Lakshmi Devi, beautifully sculptured, measuring about 3 feet high, with an attendant on either side. This rare quadruple-shaped temple consists of four garbagrihas facing north, south, east and west, with idols of Kali, Vishnu, Lakshmi and Bootha-natha Linga, respectively. The Lakshmi temple is surrounded by 7 feet high a wall made entirely of stone and lays around the entire perimeter of the temple.The temple two main entrances ,one on the east and another one on the west .Some of the main attractions of the temple here are the four small shrines surmounted by stone towers and the Hoysala crests found at the corners of the enclosure. The groups of stone towers are constructed on the lines of Kadamba Naagara style, resembling pyramids from one end, and the mantapa in the front is supported by 18 carved pillars.The beautiful sculptures are said to have been carved by the legendary sculptor Jakanachari. A vast lake is next to the temple from which the villagers get their water. The temple also has idols of Shiva and Kali, along with other deities. There is a Sculpture of a lion-like creature which is the insignia of the Hoysalas.External links
