"Doesn't Really Matter" is a 2000 single by R&B singer Janet Jackson. The song was the lead single from the Universal Pictures film , in which Jackson co-starred with actor Eddie Murphy. It became Jackson's ninth number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and first in the 2000s, staying at the top for three weeks, and also making Jackson the first artist in history to score number one singles in the 80's, 90's and 00's. Jackson didn't think that the song would be as big a hit as it was, as she just wrote it for the movie. The song's music video, directed by Joseph Khan, features Jackson in an abstract anime-based fantasy world, and was featured in an installment of MTV's Making the Video program.
An alternate mix of the song was later included on Jackson's seventh studio album, All for You in 2001. This version is the one she performed during the MTV Music Awards in 2000.
This song incurred a mild controversy. The chorus plagiarizes the music of Rod McKuen's song "Soldiers Who Want to Be Heroes." McKuen, made aware of the plagiarism, has since been working to settle the problem.
This song is confirmed to be in Dance Dance Revolution SuperNOVA, the next game in the series.
A cover version of this song was performed by Shimatani Hitomi entitled "Papillon". Janet Jackson's name is seen in the credits of this single.
