Dog the Bounty Hunter

Encyclopedia : D : DO : DOG : Dog the Bounty Hunter

Dog the Bounty Hunter is a reality television show chronicling Duane "Dog" Chapman's operations in his bounty hunting firm Da Kine Bail Bonds in Honolulu, Hawaii. Dog is joined in his exploits by his wife and business partner Beth Smith, his sons Leland and Duane, and his "brother," Tim "Youngblood" Chapman (no relation). In addition, his nephew Justin Bihag appeared in the first season. Besides Hawaii, newer episodes have included cases in Dog Chapman's home state of Colorado. He has captured over 6,000 law breakers.

While the program for the most part follows Chapman and his team's pursuits against actual criminals who violated the conditions of their bail, the program also explores Chapman's human side, especially his God-fearing attitude (being a born again Christian) and his life as a husband to Beth, a father to his twelve children, and a reformed ex-convict. Chapman and Smith were married on May 20, 2006 after decades of living together in a common law marriage.

The program spun off from their appearance in the A&E Network's Take This Job, a program about people with unusual occupations. Both shows are produced for A&E by Hybrid Films, a New York-based production company.

Their bail bond business, Da Kine Bail Bonds, has locations in Oahu, Maui, and Honolulu, Hawaii. The Honolulu office is located at 1383 Queen Emma St.

Notable episodes

Chapman went after a criminal who disappeared with his girlfriend. He and his crew went to the house of the girlfriend's brother, a man named John Souza. Souza, a religion teacher at Damien Memorial School, refused to help Chapman because, according to Souza, "There are two categories of problems: my problem, and somebody else's problem." Chapman and Beth Smith attempted to intimidate Souza, but he didn't back down. He warned them that he had two registered firearms in his house, and that he was not afraid to defend his property against harassers. At this point, the A&E crew left Dog and Smith alone. When Souza threatened to call the police they apologized and left
