Doha Stadium

Encyclopedia : D : DO : DOH : Doha Stadium

Doha Stadium is the home of Bnei Sakhnin.

Located in the small Galilee town of Sakhnin, it was built with public funds largely from the State of Israel and the Qatar National Olympic Committee hence the name "Doha". The decision by the Qataris to build the stadium in Israel came after a meeting between Member of Knesset, Ahmed Tibi and Secretary General of the Qatar National Olympic Committee Sheikh Saoud Abdulrahman Al-Thani after Tibi expressed his concern of the conditions for sport in Sakhnin. Some members of the Israeli government were said to have been confused as to why the stadium was called Doha Stadium since the Israeli government footed most of the bill for its construction.

Despite rules set in place by the Israel Football Association that Ligat ha'Al (Premier League) matches must be played in stadiums with a minimum capacity of 6000, they have been lenient with Bnei Sakhnin since the stadium's final capacity will reach 15,000.
