Dolly Wilde

Encyclopedia : D : DO : DOL : Dolly Wilde

Dorothy "Dolly" Wilde (1895-1941) was an English socialite, made famous by her family connections and her scandalous reputation. She was the only child of Oscar Wilde's older brother Willie. She was born shortly after her uncle Oscar Wilde was arrested for homosexual acts. She was described as lovely, sophisticated, and was popular for her witty conversation, even in a social circle that was known for its flamboyant talkers.

Dolly Wilde was regarded by many as a gifted storyteller and writer, but she never took advantage of these natural talents. Her only written work was animated correspondence with her friends. She attended many salons, where she acted charming, funny, and sexually uninhibited. She was bisexual and had many lovers of both sexes. Her longest relationship was with openly lesbian American heiress, socialite, and writer Natalie Clifford Barney, who was host of one of the most well-known Parisian literary salon of the 20th century.

Wilde was well known to have used drugs and alcohol in excess, living a fast-paced partying lifestyle. She died, possibly from a drug overdose, in London in 1941, at the age of 45.
