Don Marquis Pete the Pup
Encyclopedia : D : DO : DON : Don Marquis Pete the Pup
Pete the Pup is a character in the "archy and mehitabel" writings of Don Marquis. Pete is a Boston Bull Terrier with a raw, passionate joy for life and devotion to his ‘master’. Like Marquis' other animal characters, Pete types his poetry at night on the author’s typewriter (seldom capitalizing or using punctuation). Unlike much of the other character's contributions, Pete writes of his uncomplicated life without strong political and social references. Here is an example of a poem written by Pete the Pup. It comes from “the lives and times of archy & mehitabel” by Don Marquis, Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, 1950.
pete at the seashore
i ran along the yellow sand
and made the sea gulls fly
i chased them down the waters edge
i chased them up the sky
i ran so hard i ran so fast
i left the spray behind
i chased the flying flecks of foam
and i outran the wind
an airplane sailing overhead
climbed when it heard me bark
i yelped and leapt right at the sun
until the sky grew dark
some little children on the beach
threw sticks and ran with me
o master let us go again
and play beside the sea
