Donner Party timeline

Encyclopedia : D : DO : DON : Donner Party timeline

Donner Party timeline provides an almost day-to-day basic description of events directly associated with the Donner Party, covering the Party's journey from Illinois to California—2,500 miles (4,023 kilometers), over the Great Plains, two mountain ranges, and the deserts of the Great Basin.

The timeline is based largely on

Following the timeline is a table of deaths in the party, further details of which will be filled in and refined, and which may be expanded to include the list of survivors.

At the lake, Patrick Breen records: "Peggy very uneasy for fear we shall all perish with hunger. We have but a little meat left & only part of 3 hides has to support Mrs. Reid. She has nothing left but one hide & it is on Graves's shanty. Milt is living there & likely will keep that hide."

Important note

There were 87 emigrants in the Donner Party, plus two California Indians who joined them in Nevada, for a total of 89 people. Of the 89, only 81 were trapped in the mountains because there had been additions to and subtractions from the group along the way.

Of the total 89 members, 41 died and 48 survived; of the 81 people trapped in the mountains, 36 died and 45 survived.

About two thirds of the women and children survived, and about two thirds of the men died. All four Donner adults (the couples George & Tamzene and Jacob & Elizabeth) died; all the Reeds and all the Breens survived.
