Dordt College is a private, Christian, liberal arts college located in Sioux Center, Iowa. The school was founded in 1955 by Dutch Calvinists. It is affiliated with the Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRC).

History

Dordt College's name originates from the Synod of Dordrecht, held in the Netherlands in 1618-1619. The Canons of Dordt, one of the three major confessional statements of Reformed churches, was produced by that synod. The Canons of Dordt were a response to statements made by the followers of Jacob Arminius, and emphasized the sovereignty of God through His electing grace.

Students

Over 1,300 students hailing from more than 25 states, 15 foreign countries and 6 Canadian provinces attend Dordt College. There is a student-faculty ratio of 15:1. Nearly 90 percent of students live within one of the on-campus residence halls or off-campus apartments. Almost all students receive financial aid of some sort, through loans, grants, work-study opportunities and/or scholarships.

Academics

The curriculum is liberal arts-based from a Reformed Christian perspective, offering more than 30 majors and 10 pre-professional programs of study. Dordt College offers a Master of Education degree, four-year Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science in Engineering, and Bachelor of Social Work degrees in addition to two-year Associate of Arts degrees.

Accreditation

Dordt College was first accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools as a four-year Bachelor's degree-granting institution in 1971 with the most recent renewal in 2001. The college gained approval from the NCA to offer a graduate program leading to the Master of Education degree in 1994, and also has accredited programs in education, engineering (ABET), and social work.

Activities

The college sponsors a number of clubs and activities, including choir, band, student government, and drama, along with other academic and social organizations.

Athletics

Dordt, whose teams go by the name Defenders, is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) and offers many varsity and intramural sports. Men's teams include baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor track, outdoor track and football; women's teams include basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor track, and volleyball.
