Encyclopedia : D : DO : DOU : Double Digits
Double Digits was a pricing game on the American television game show, The Price Is Right. It was played for a car, and used small prizes.
Gameplay
This short-lived game is believed to have had two completely different formats in its short life. The objective in both versions was to correctly guess all four digits to win the car. Regardless of the outcome, the contestant kept any small prize he/she guessed correctly on.Format 1
The contestant was shown the second digit of each small prize and had to correctly place the first digits (which were provided) in each one so that when read from left to right, they would form the price of the car.Format 2
In the second format, the second digit of each of the small prizes was shown, and the player given two choices for the first digit. The correct first digits, read in order from left to right, again would form the price of the car.Trivia
Double Digits was one of the first two pricing games to have its name printed on the board (with the other being Hi Lo). Older pricing games wouldn't have their names added on their sets until later in the show's run.Retirement
Double Digits was active in The Price is Right pricing game rotation in early 1973.The game was retired – reportedly after just four playings – because of its confusing nature. However, its gameplay concepts were recycled into two far-more enduring games:
- Temptation, where the player builds the price of a car from digits in the prices of smaller items.
- Switcheroo, where the contestant fills in the missing digits of prices from a series of choices.
