Douglas, Cork

Encyclopedia : D : DO : DOU : Douglas, Cork

Douglas (Irish: Dúglas) is a suburb of Cork City that is situated 4 km south of Cork City in Ireland. As its borders are ill-defined and it straddles the boundary between Cork City and County Cork, it is difficult to ascertain the exact population. The CSO gives a figure of 15,286 for the parts of Douglas that lie within Cork County. No figure is provided for the parts within Cork City.

The name derives from the Irish words Dubh Ghlas, meaning Dark Stream, which still flows through the village. The stream flows into Cork Harbour.

History

The town was founded when Huguenot refugees introduced the textile industry in the 18th century. Amongst other things, the mill, in the Donnybrook area of the village, produced sails for the Royal Navy. A second mill was built in the 19th century. Between them, the two mills provided much of the employment in the area.

In the second half of the 20th century, Douglas underwent major changes as it became a suburb of Cork City. A large amount of new housing was built and the area between Douglas and Cork City became entirely built-up. Schools, shopping centres, a cinema and other amenities developed to serve this new population.
