Douglass College

Encyclopedia : D : DO : DOU : Douglass College

Douglass College is the women's college of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

It is the largest public women's college in the United States. It was founded as the New Jersey College for Women in 1918 by Mabel Smith Douglass. The current Dean of Douglass College is Carmen Twillie Ambar. Douglass is comparable to Barnard College (with its affiliation to Columbia University) except Douglass is part of Rutgers University.

In 2005, Rutgers University President Richard McCormick unveiled plans to merge Douglass College with the University's three other undergraduate liberal arts colleges — Rutgers College, Livingston College and University College — to create the School of Arts and Sciences. This plan had been met with opposition by many students and alumnae. However, Douglass will become a residential college within this larger school. The name of the "new" Douglass will be Douglass Residential College. Female students who wish to continue with the Mabel Smith Douglass vision of higher education and women's leadership may apply to the school after admission to Rutgers University.
