Dover-Foxcroft is a town in Piscataquis County, Maine, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the town population was 4,211. In 1922, the towns of Dover and Foxcroft, which were separated by the Piscataquis River, merged into one town.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 184.5 km² (71.2 mi²). 176.7 km² (68.2 mi²) of it is land and 7.7 km² (3.0 mi²) of it (4.18%) is water.Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 4,211 people, 1,658 households, and 1,152 families residing in the town. The population density was 23.8/km² (61.7/mi²). There were 2,200 housing units at an average density of 12.4/km² (32.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.91% White, 0.21% Black or African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 1.61% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.95% of the population.There were 1,658 households out of which 32.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.6% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% were non-families. 25.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the town the population was spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.6 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $30,164, and the median income for a family was $36,287. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,613 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,544. About 13.6% of families and 15.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.3% of those under age 18 and 8.8% of those age 65 or over.
