Doves are a rock band from Manchester, England. The band is known for its large, epic sound, and has been compared with contemporaries such as Radiohead as well as classic Manchester bands such as The Stone Roses, New Order and The Smiths and experimental acts such as Talk Talk and Sigur Rós.
The three members of Doves are twins Jez Williams (b. February 18, 1970) (guitar) and Andy Williams (b. February 18, 1970) (drums and occasional vocals), and Jimi Goodwin (b. May 28, 1970) (vocals, bass, guitar and occasionally drums).
History
Early career as 'Sub Sub' (1991-96)
The three members met at school in Wilmslow when they were 15. They formed a Madchester-influenced dance collective called Sub Sub, which had moderate success in the early 1990s, including the hit single "Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)", but the trio gradually moved in a more rock direction. This transition was hastened by the destruction of their studio in a fire in 1996.....
Doves (1998-present)
Following the fire, the band regrouped, changed their name to Doves and released three EPs in 1998 and 1999, which established the group's new sound and met with a warm critical response.
Their debut album Lost Souls (2000) was received with rapturous critical acclaim, and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, which they lost to fellow Mancunian Badly Drawn Boy. Doves' second album The Last Broadcast was released two years later, reached #1 in the UK album chart and was also nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. This record contained the track "There Goes the Fear", which reached #3 in the UK singles chart despite only being released for one day before it was deleted. In 2003, the band released a B-sides compilation, Lost Sides, and a DVD entitled Where We're Calling From, recorded live at a gig in Cornwall's Eden Project.
Their third studio album, Some Cities, was released in February 2005 and went straight to #1 in the UK album chart, aided by some of the strongest reviews they'd received to date, and preceded by the single "Black and White Town," which reached #6 in the UK singles chart. At one of the concerts to promote the album they were supported by another Mancunian band, I Am Kloot.
The band are currently working on new material in Greater Manchester, on a rural farm (close to the M56 motorway). Possible release for a new studio album could be early to mid 2007.
Trivia
- On tour and on some recordings Doves are joined by keyboardist Martin Rebelski.
- Doves, like their fellow rock music act Oasis are massive Manchester City fans, and a re-recorded version of "Words", called "Live For City", is played before every home match at the City of Manchester Stadium.
- Doves previously acted as an occasional backing band for Badly Drawn Boy, whose album The Hour of Bewilderbeast beat Lost Souls to take the 2000 Mercury Music Prize.
- The name 'Doves' was derived from the phrase, "Like doves rising from the ashes". A reference to the burning of their original studio whilst working under the name Sub Sub.
- According to [this interview], M62 Song, from The Last Broadcast, was recorded under a flyover of the M62 motorway (the album liner notes place the flyover at Northenden near Manchester). After the recording was completed, they realized that they had accidentally used the melody from Moonchild by King Crimson, after hearing it on the soundtrack to the Vincent Gallo film Buffalo 66, and credited King Crimson accordingly.
- "Black and White Town" is on the video game FIFA 06 and is the song on the Memorable Moments video on the game.
