Doyle Bramhall II

Encyclopedia : D : DO : DOY : Doyle Bramhall II

Doyle Bramhall II (born 24 December, 1968) is a guitarist and vocalist for the band Smokestack and is also the second guitarist in Eric Clapton's band.

History

Bramhall was born in Austin, Texas and is the son of drummer Doyle Bramhall, Sr.. At age 16, Doyle Bramhall II toured with Jimmy Vaughan's band, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, as second guitarist. Shortly thereafter, he formed The Arc Angels with Charlie Sexton.

In 2000, he joined Eric Clapton's studio band, and started touring with him, as a second guitarist, in 2001.

Doyle also played guitar on the 1999-2000 In the Flesh tour (captured on the In the Flesh Live album) by ex-Pink Floyd member Roger Waters. Previous to that, Doyle also played a much lower key role backing sister-in-law Wendy Melvoin for her band Girl Bros., and more recently with Wendy and Lisa in the groups Pacifico and Funk Sway. Doyle and the latter group - with co-lead vocals by Erykah Badu - is featured in the upcoming music documentary Before the Music Dies.

It is interesting to note that Doyle not only plays left-handed, but his guitars are strung as if to be played by a right handed player. In other words, the Low E String will be at the bottom of his guitar, and the high string at the top.
