Drachenfutter
Encyclopedia : D : DR : DRA : Drachenfutter
A German term that is thought to be literally untranslatable into English. This word, as best as can be translated, means "a gift brought home by a husband to console, calm or bribe their wife when they have been out too late, often after drinking, or visiting a bar, restaurant or casino." The word literally translates into English meaning "dragon fodder", assumedly as a gift to console a wife when they are angry at their husband, or like a "dragon". Often husbands would prepare a wrapped gift in advance on a Saturday night to present to their wife following a late night out. Although this happened much more frequently in decades past, this still does occur less commonly today. This word can also mean a gift given or an act performed out of guilt of having too much fun. For example, an employee may present a gift to their boss, from children to parents, a student to a teacher or in similar circumstances.
