The Protoss Dragoon is a mechanized assault and support unit in the real-time strategy game StarCraft.

Game unit

The Dragoon is a Protoss ranged attack quadrapedal mecha that deals medium (20 points) explosive damage. Dragoons can attack both ground and air unit with equal efficiency. The Dragoon can be upgraded for longer range, higher damage and stronger armor and shields. The Protoss Dragoon possesses 100 hit points and 80 points of plasma shielding. It has a base armor of 1 and is considered a large unit. One Dragoon takes up four "slots" in a Protoss Shuttle, which has eight available slots in total. Creating a Dragoon requires you to have a Gateway and a Cybernetics Core. Each Dragoon costs 125 minerals, 50 gas, and requires 2 points of Psi in game. It is a very versatile unit at any time in a standard Protoss game.

Role in Protoss society

Dragoons are created from Zealots who have been crippled or mortally injured in combat and are thus unable to continue fighting in their preferred manner - with a pair of psionic blades. They continue to volunteer their services, however; their crippled or mortally injured bodies are placed within large exoskeletons which contain any life-support equipment required by the individual Protoss.

Living within a cold and dark environment, Dragoons are very somber compared to their Zealot counterparts. Seeing themselves as fallen warriors they show many signs of lost pride. Based on their quotes within the game; "I have returned", "For vengence", "I am needed", and "Make use of me" it becomes clear that Dragoons feel a sense of worthlessness among the protoss. For this reason Dragoons make a large effort to contribute to Protoss society.

Although considered second class citizens compared to Zealots, Dragoons are undeniably valuable. Having both a ground/air attack and a ranged attack they are the all purpose Protoss unit(similar to the Zerg Hydralisk or the Terran Marine). When combined with Zealots they create a simple yet deadly force of long and close range attacks.

Dragoon technology

Dragoon weaponry consists of a psychically shielded bolt of antimatter, capable of being directed towards both air and ground units. The weapon is known as a phase disrupter: the same weapon is mounted on the Protoss Arbiter. It is functionally similar to that of the Photon Cannon.

Within the Cybernetics Core, the structure required to summon Dragoons, are the mysterious essence translators that bond the spirits of fallen Protoss to the cold metal exoskeletons of the Dragoons. Eventually, by focusing through the Khala, the fallen warriors can control the movements of the Dragoon as naturally as if they were within their former bodies.

Terran operatives often had a vested interest in Zerg and Protoss alien technology, as evidenced by the Starcraft Map of the Month scenario Deceptions, in which Kimeran Pirates steal (among other things) a data file titled "Utilizing Dragoon Technology For Human Reconstruction" from a Confederate installation.

Combat Strategies

While Dragoons can function as great units on their own, they are best when complimented by zealots. This helps to protect them from being overrun by close range units like zerglings. Dragoons also provide a method of attack for air units.

Combat Advantages

-Powerful attack (20 damage) which can be used against air and ground units
-Fast moving speed
-Can attack at a relatively long range

Combat Disadvantages

-Vulnerable to groups of short range attackers (i.e Zerglings)
-moderate cool down time

Famous Dragoons

  • Fenix
  • Eredas (introduced in )
  • Taldarin (introduced in Resurrection IV)
Fenix had said, of becoming a Dragoon: "After my unfortunate defeat, my ruined body was recovered by our brethren. I now reside within the cold, robotic shell of a Dragoon.

"There is no shame in defeat so long as the spirit is unconquered, and I am still able to serve Aiur to a degree."

Quotes

"I have returned"

"Unauthorized transmission, incorrect protocol"

"*beep beep* Drop your weapon. You have 15 seconds to comply" (From Robocop)

"Five, four, three, two, one- (fires weapon)" (From Robocop)

"For vengence!"
