Duarte Pacheco Pereira
Encyclopedia : D : DU : DUA : Duarte Pacheco Pereira
Duarte Pacheco Pereira was a 15th century Portuguese captain and explorer of the Atlantic Ocean. He travelled particularly in the central Atlantic, west of Cape Verde, and in the coast of West Africa. His diary (1506), preserved in the Portuguese National Archive (Torre do Tombo), is probably the first European document to acknowledge that chimpanzees built their own rudimentary tools. Recent research shows he discovered Brazil before Pedro Álvares Cabral, at the year of 1498. However, this fact was kept secret by the Portuguese Crown.
