Dumbarton Express
Encyclopedia : D : DU : DUM : Dumbarton Express
The Dumbarton Express is a California bus service operating between Union City BART station and Palo Alto Caltrain station via the Dumbarton Bridge. It is operated by a group of operators including BART, VTA, Union City Transit and AC Transit. It is coloured orange and designated "DB" on VTA sytem maps.
The bus service charges $1.50 for an adult local fare, $3.00 for a transbay fare, and $1.50 for a Transbay extension of a pass that is good only for local fares. Half-fares are charged for children, seniors and diabled persons. VTA ECO Passes are accepted for full Transbay fare, as are Dumbarton Express passes costing $90 and 20-ride ticket books costing $60. Within the East Bay, AC Transit tickets, passes and transfers are accepted for a full local fare or half a Transbay fare, as are those from Union City Transit, and Caltrain monthly passes of two or more zones (three zones for reduced-rate passes). BART Plus tickets are taken for a local fare, but a full Transbay fare must be paid. Within the West Bay, passes from SamTrans, VTA, Caltrain and BART Plus are accpeted, though the same rules governing BART Plus and Caltrain passes on the East Bay apply. Due to the acceptance of different monthly passes, especially in the West Bay, some people pay significantly more per month. For example, a commuter using a VTA pass for west-bay local service would pay $61.25 per month, whereas a commuter using a SamTrans pass for the same services would pay only $48. A youth using such passes would pay as much as $20 less by using a SamTrans pass.
In January 2006, AC Transit proposed a service review and fare increase that would bring fare media in line with AC Transit's Transbay passes while maintaining West Bay payments and cut stops in Palo Alto. [link]
