Duodenal Switch surgery is a radical, effective weight-loss surgery.
Three quarters of the stomach is removed, and the small intestine is rearranged so that the section carrying food from the small stomach skips most of the intestine that has digestive juices.
Net effect is that you can not eat as much food and much of the food you do eat is not absorbed.
For this reason, for the rest of the patients life, they must eat a high-protein diet combined with vitamin and mineral supplements.
Advantages
- Greater stomach capacity, so can take large quantities of food
- Adjustable surgery and partially reversible
- If other obesity surgery fails, this procedure a good option for revision
Disadvantages
- Open operation and hence the involves higher risks
- Longer period for recovery
- Risk of deficiency state
- Removal of gallbladder to avoid gallstones formation
This procedure results in long term weight loss in most obese patients. It also results in good weight loss for some super obese patients
