Dupont (TTC)

Encyclopedia : D : DU : DUP : Dupont (TTC)

Dupont is a station on the Yonge-University-Spadina line of the subway/RT system in Toronto, Canada. It is located on Spadina Road at 278 Dupont Street. It opened in 1978. Nearby landmarks include Casa Loma, George Brown College, and the Toronto Archives. The Russell Hill Subway accident happened just north of the station on the southbound line in 1995.

In 1 June, a mechanical failure, allegedly, caused by a metal inspection cover in the bottom of a train inside the station dislodged, and wedged in the third rail, at 9:30 local time, filling the station with smoke, and forcing the evacuation of the station. The section between St. Clair and St. George Stations was closed for approximatelly one hour, forcing the use of shuttle buses between that section. Some considered the accident as sabotage by TTC personel, as TTC workers were on Monday, 29 May, although this possibility was discarded by the Toronto Police.

The central cavern of the station features a tilework mural by James Sutherland entitled Spadina Summer Under.
