Dupont Circle (Washington Metro)

Encyclopedia : D : DU : DUP : Dupont Circle (Washington Metro)

Dupont Circle is a Washington Metro station in Washington, DC on the Red Line.

The station serves the northwest edge of downtown Washington, lying under Dupont Circle with two entrances: the north entrance, on Q Street Northwest between Connecticut Avenue and 20th Street, N.W., and the south entrance, on 19th Street. The Q Street entrance features a large round hole with terraced plants around the escalator, and a tube at the edge, giving riders on the escalator the impression that they are descending into what is locally known as "[the bowl]." The station had to be built very deep to get under a former streetcar tunnel which goes under the circle, as well as Rock Creek Park. Service began on January 17, 1977.
