Dutch, Staunton gambit

Encyclopedia : D : DU : DUT : Dutch, Staunton gambit

tright

In chess, A82 is the ECO code for the Dutch, Staunton gambit chess opening. The game begins 1.d4 f5 2.e4 fxe4 3 Nc3 Nf6 (see diagram). Black can decline the gambit in the Balogh Defense: 2....d6 3.exf5 Bxf5 4.Bd3 but is questionable. White can offer a second pawn in the mainline with 3.f3 but to take the second pawn eases White's development problems. From the diagram, play can proceed a few ways: g4?!, f3 or Bg5 (Bg5 was first played by Howard Staunton vs Bernhard Horwitz in London, 1846 and is found in the A83 classification). Black picks up the pawn for a kingside weakness, either the a2-g8 diagonal or, after ...d5 a weakness at e5.
