Duval County is notorious for corrupt politics, particularly during the mid-20th Century, when it was largely controlled by the political machine headed by George Parr. Like much of heavily Hispanic South Texas, it went solidly for Democrat John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election despite President Bush's efforts to woo Hispanic votes. It is considered a Democratic stronghold.
