The E05 or E5 is part of the United Nations international E-road network. It is the westernmost north-south "reference road", running from Greenock, United Kingdom south through France to Algeciras, Spain.[European Agreement on Main International Traffic Arteries], 5 April 2002
United Kingdom
Like all other E-roads, the E05 is not signed in the United Kingdom. It follows the following roads:- M74, A74(M) and A74, Glasgow via Gretna to Carlisle
- M6, Carlisle via Penrith, Preston and Warrington to Birmingham
- *The M6 Toll provides an alternate route in the Birmingham area.
- M42, M40, A34 and M3, Birmingham via Newbury to Southampton
France
In France, the E05 is signed. It uses the following roads:- A131 and A13, Le Havre to Paris
- *The N182 is used at a gap of the A131 across the Seine.
- The southwest part of the Périphérique around downtown Paris
- A6a and A10, Paris via Orléans, Tours and Poitiers to Bordeaux
- A630 around the west side of Bordeaux[[Citing sources citation needed]]
- A63, N10 and A63, Bordeaux to Spain
Spain
In Spain, the E05 is signed. In uses the following roads:- A-8, France to San Sebastián
- N-I and A-1, San Sebastián via Burgos to Madrid
- M-40 around the east side of Madrid
- N-IV and A-4, Madrid via Córdoba and Sevilla to Cádiz
- A-48 and N-340, Cádiz to Algeciras
