e7broadband came under some criticism after a network restructuring that started at the end of December, 2005. While this was intended to improve network reliability, some users complained of being without internet access or with only intermittent access[link]. Ofcom have said they are "in contact with the company" and asserts that e7broadband have "assured Ofcom that it is working to resolve these problems"[link].
United Kingdom broadband users with a telephone network based connection need to obtain a migration authorisation code (MAC) from their existing internet provider (ISP) in order to transfer to a new ISP. Alternatively they must request their existing ISP to cease their service in order to free the customer line equipment for a new ISP. Some customers have had difficulty in obtaining a MAC or cessation because of communication difficulties with e7broadband. They have therefore been unable to migrate to an alternative ISP and some have been left without service for several months. Ofcom have stated that they are considering improvements to the current UK migration system because of this and related problems.
As of late April 2006, subscriptions for a term longer than 1 month at a time had been withdrawn, and due to easynet being forced to withdraw service, all packages offering a line speed higher than 2Mbps had also been withdrawn, although existing users had been offered an upgrade to ADSL Max at an unspecified future date for a pre-payment of £19. In the last week of April 2006, customers found they were again able to contact the ISP's customer services number, which appeared to be connected to a new call centre. Shortly after this, on 28th April 2006, there were significant changes to the network routing connecting E7even's network to the Internet. Despite speculation about the implications of these changes, no formal announcement has yet been made.
On the 1st July 2006, customers were informed of the termination of their contracts, as of 14th July. You can see the FAQ web page about the changes[link]. Users can restart their service immediately by signing up with EzeeDSL, part of the 186k group. EzeeDSL cannot generate MAC codes to enable transfer to another provider before the 14th July; however after that the line will be detagged with BT Wholesale and users can sign up with any new provider of their choice[link]. In either case, users should also apply for a refund[link] from e7broadband.
