Encyclopedia : E : ED : EDF : EDF Energy

EDF Energy is an energy company that provides gas and electricity to homes throughout the United Kingdom. It employs over 11,000 people. The company is owned by the French energy company Électricité de France and was formed in 2002 following the acquisition and mergers of Seeboard Energy, London Energy (formerly the London Electricity Board), and SWEB Energy. The company participates in the Nectar loyalty card scheme.

Subsidiaries of EDF are licensed as Distribution Network Operators for the London, Eastern England and South East England regions by the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets.

EDF Energy were sponsors of ITV's coverage of the 2006 World Cup in Germany (shared with Budweiser).

Although marketing itself as a green energy supplier, in 2004 EDF Energy spent virtually nothing on the construction of new renewable energy generation. As reported in the Ecologist magazine.
