East Capitol Street

East Capitol Street is a major street that divides the northeast and southeast quadrants of Washington, D.C. It runs eastward from the United States Capitol all the way to the DC-Maryland border. It runs perfectly straight until Lincoln Park, then straight again until Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium. After the stadium, East Capitol crosses the Anacostia River over the Whitney Young Memorial Bridge and then goes underneath Route 295 before crossing into Prince George's County, Maryland where it becomes Maryland State Highway 214.

East Capitol Street originally began at First Street, N.E./S.E. However, in 2005, the block between First and Second Streets was closed for security reasons, and the construction of the new Capitol visitor center.

The first 15 blocks of East Capitol Street make up the heart of Washington's prestigious Capitol Hill neighborhood and therefore East Capitol is home to some of the priciest real estate in the entire city. Points of interest along East Capitol Street include the Folger Shakespeare Library.
