East Kazakhstan Province

East Kazakhstan (also known as Shyghys Qazaqstan) is a province of Kazakhstan. Its capital is Öskemen (also referred to as Ust-Kamenogorsk). The province touches Russia on the north and northeast and the People's Republic of China on the south and southeast. It is also very near the western tip of Mongolia. The population of the province is 897,000; the capital's is 305,000. The area has many Russians and Ukrainians; the capital itself has more of those two groups than Kazakhs themselves. The area is 283,300 in square kilometers.
