BBC East Midlands Today is the BBC's regional television news programme for the east midlands region, which is comprises southern Derbyshire, Leicestershire, southern Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland (note this is different to the political East Midlands region). It broadcasts on BBC One from its studio at the space-age BBC centre in Nottingham on London Road, also home to Radio Nottingham, to about 250,000 people. The main transmitter for the programme is Waltham near Melton Mowbray in east Leicestershire. Viewers in south Lincolnshire also have Look North, with stories often being duplicated by both newsrooms. The format of the programme, which is similar to all other BBC local TV news sharing the same title music, began on 16 September 2002, with an update on 6 September 2004.

East Midlands Today was established as an independent program in January 1991, having previously been part of the BBC Midlands Today program (which began on 5th October 1987). Midlands Today now covers just the West Midlands. The split arose from criticisms of Midlands Today being too Birmingham-centric, which consumed a lot of airtime devoted to Birmingham and Coventry.

Current presenters include [Mel Coles], Anne Davies, [Dominic Heale], [Jo Healey], [Carol Hinds], [Quentin Rayner], and [Marie Ashby]. Marie Ashby does the [Politics Show] on a Sunday with John Hess. [Dominic Heale], who studied at Hull University, worked for Central News East directly before 'changing sides' to work for the BBC. Anne Davies has presented since May 2001.

Presenters in earlier times were [Kathy Rochford] and Janet Mayo. The presenters tend not to have strong Nottingham or Derby accents, though some of the weathermen do. The weather was first presented for several years by [Jo Wheeler], former presenter on Radio Lincolnshire, who now works on SKY News.

Anne Davies read the news on GMTV for eight years, and previously was a presenter on Central News East, which broadcast from Nottingham. She also presents the weekly local Inside Out documentary on Mondays at 7.30pm, as well as helping out on the occasional morning show on Radio Leicester.

The weather is presented by former Leicester Sound presenter, [Sara Blizzard], and occasionally by [Liam Dutton]. Sport is mentioned half-way through the programme by [Colin Hazelden], a Hull University graduate. Mel Coles lives with [Rob Glass] (one of the first weather presenters for Five), one of the other reporters.

At the end of the programme, the two presenters select stories of interest from local papers which include the Derby Evening Telegraph, Leicester Mercury or Nottingham Evening Post, usually of an up-beat, heart-warming or trivial nature.
