Edinburgh South is a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.
Prior to the 2005 general election the constituency had the same boundaries as the Scottish Parliament constituency with the same name. See Edinburgh South (Scottish Parliament constituency).
Selected Candidates
There is every indication that sitting Labour MP Nigel Griffiths intends to fight the constituency at the next general election. The small Labour majority of 405 means that this is the top target seat against Labour for the Liberal Democrats in the House of Commons and in March 2006 they selected local councillor Fred Mackintosh as their candidate.
Boundaries
The constituency covers the southern portion of Edinburgh, including the wards of Alnwickhill, Fairmilehead, Gilmerton, Kaimes, Marchmont, Merchiston, Moredun, Newington, North Morningside and the Grange, Sciennes, and South Morningside. The constituency is predominantly suburban.
Five of these wards are represented by Scottish Liberal Democrat councillors, four by Labour councillors and two by Conservative councillors. There are no SNP or Green councillors in the Constituency.
