Edo Maajka (born as Edin Osmić on December 22, 1978 in Brčko, Bosnia and Herzegovina) is the most popular rapper from Bosnia and most popular in the entire Balkan region. Edin's nickname Edo Maajka means "Edo the Mother".
Beginnings
In 1992 when the Bosnian war started, Edo left his homeland Bosnia and went to Zagreb. After the war, Edo returned to Bosnia to study criminal law. He went to Tuzla and became a member of the hardcore rap group Diskord, later named Odbrana (Defence). This group became one of the best in Tuzla and Bosnia. Their demo single "Odbrana '99" (Defence '99) became the year's hit on the radio station Hit-u in Brčko.Edo's love is hip-hop and rap and he was first exposed on the radio station "Kameleon", where he featured his first freestyle rap. The station FM Jam is where Edo is still a big part of. FM Jam gathered young talents to create the Bosnian rap group "Disciplinska Komisija" (Disiplinary Commission), which Edo is a member of.
After a year of studying, Edo quit his education due to financial problems and went back to Zagreb to meet his friend Shot (Elemental), where they recorded his first single "Minimalni Rizik", a month later another song "Mahir i Alma". Those songs were top hit on the radio station Blackout and the response was enthusiastic. The demo "Mahir i Alma" became Kameleon's hit of 2001.
\"Edo Maajka\"
Edo chose "Menart" as his label and his first album "Slušaj Mater" (Listen to your mother) was released in spring of 2002. Slušaj mater, song that named the album, became a hit in Bosnia and the rest of the former Yugoslavia. In 2003 Edo became the most popular rapper in the former Yugoslavia. He also got several of awards including Zlatna Koogla, Davorin, Porin (music award) and Crni Mačak. He established his popularity as the best and most famous rapper by releasing more singles and being featured on songs by other artists like in "Teško je ful biti kul" by Hladno Pivo. Edo had a successful tour with The Beat Fleet and finished the year 2003 with the hit single "Prikaze".Very soon, in the April of 2004, Edo published his new album "No Sikiriki". Edo and Lexsaurini started a new booking agency A1 Booking Agency, which resulted in the most booked concerts for a rapper in that region. Edo had concerts and tours until the end of the year to promote his album "No Sikiriki". He spent 2005 holding concerts and writing new songs for his third album.
Recording of songs for the new album Stig'o Ćumur started in August of 2005, and the album was released in March of 2006. He has announced that the first single will be "To mora da je ljubav" featuring Remi, for which he shot the music video in Sarajevo. In February of 2006 Edo ended his "No Sikiriki" album tour and he started the promotion of his new album "Stig'o Ćumur" at the end of March, the day his album was released.
Popularity leads to Legacy
Edo Maajka's largest following is in Bosnia, his homeland, as well as in Croatia, Serbia and the rest of the former Yugoslav states. He has many fans in the diaspora of the former Yugoslavia, who live mainly in Western Europe and North America. Edo introduced rap and expanded the hip-hop scene to Bosnia and the Balkans and has become the number one rapper in the entire Balkan region and is expanding his popularity in Europe and the entire world. He is still a member of "Odbrana" and "Disciplinska Komisija". He is married and still lives and works in Zagreb, but often visits his homeland Bosnia and hometown Brčko.Songs
Edo Maajka often raps about the contemporary political situation and the consequences of the Yugoslav wars in which he represents the Bosnian point of view in every song, but also raps about the problems of the three main ethnic groups in Bosnia. For example, on "On je mlađi" he raps about the son of a Croatian war veteran who is engaged to a Serb girl. However, his lyrics are not limited to political issues - he often raps about youth issues like in Saletova Osveta, a dislike of pop music in the song Kliše, intense dislike of bad rapping in "Slušaj Mater" and other songs as well. Not all of his songs are negative, some of them have positive messages and are relaxing to listen to as well, such as the title track from his album "No Sikiriki", as well as "Legenda o Elvisu","Faca" and "Para na Paru".
Edo's Feuds
Edo Maajka has feud with the Croatian pop singer Severina. The feud began when Severina in a song called "Hrvatica" (Croatian girl) said "hip-hoperi dignite hajku, djeca vam slušaju pogrešnu majku" (rappers raise a revolt, your kids are listening to the wrong "mother"). In Bosnian Majka means "mother" hence Edo Maajka. He took that as a personal attack on him. So he said in an interview that Severina said that against him because he's Bosnian and more famous in Croatia than she is. So he struck back with the song "Kliše" in which he said "svi znamo repat, svako može Severinu jebat" (all of us can rap, anyone can screw Severina) referring to the homemade porn clip of Severina published on Internet and pirated DVDs.
A New Name
Edo said in an interview he is going to release a live album with his band(Disciplinska Komisija) that will contain 13 of his songs and some new material as well, but won't be released for two years. He also said that he is recording songs under the name MC Berbo, who is the total opposite of what he is now. MC Berbo is a man who loves whores, new and expensive cars, drugs, money, etc... The most disgraceful things you can rap about is what MC Berbo is about.
He also will work on another soundtrack for an unamed movie.
Albums
He has released three albums and one soundtrack to a movie album. All of his albums have been released on Fm Jam records in Bosnia, Menart label in Croatia, Bassivity Music in Serbia.
