Edward Routh

Encyclopedia : E : ED : EDW : Edward Routh

Edward John Routh (18311907) was a British mathematician, noted as the outstanding coach of students preparing for the Mathematical Tripos examination of the University of Cambridge in its heyday in the middle of the nineteenth century. Over a period of 22 years from 1862 Routh coached the Senior Wrangler in every year. Routh himself was a Senior Wrangler.

Besides his intensive work in teaching, which had a persistent effect on the presentation of mathematical physics, he contributed original research, for example the Routh-Hurwitz theorem. Central tenets of modern control systems theory relies upon the Routh stability criterion, an application of Sturm's Theorem to evaluate Cauchy indices through the use of the Euclidean algorithm. He was awarded the 1877 Adams Prize.
