Eel River is the designation of the first operative HVDC system equipped with thyristors. The HVDC Eel River is a back-to-back HVDC station at Eel River, New Brunswick, Canada. It went in service in 1972 and it can transmit a power up to 320 megawatts (MW) at a symmetrical voltage at 80 kV.
