The Eight Principles of Yong (永字八法 Pinyin: Yǒngzì Bā Fǎ; Japanese: えいじはっぽう, Eiji Happō; Korean: 영자팔법. Yeongjapalbeop; Vietnamese: Vĩnh Tự Bát Pháp/ Tám Phương Pháp về Chữ Vĩnh) explains how to write the eight strokes common in Chinese characters found all in the one character of yong (永, meaning "permanence"). It was believed that the frequent practice of these principles as a beginner calligrapher could ensure beauty in one's writing.

The Eight Principles are influenced by the earlier Seven Powers by Lady Wei Shuo. Publications on the Principles include:

The numbers of 'Principles'
The number of the strokes.
Where there are multiple numbers in an area, the strokes intercept brieftly and continue from the previous number to the next.

The Principle's names and representations are: (listed by stroke order)

  1. (側), or "Sideway"
  2. * Also known as Diǎn (點), or "Dot"
  3. * Li's name: Guài Shí (怪石), or "The Strange Stone"
  4. * Top-left to bottom-right
  5. (勒), or "Bridle"
  6. * Also known as Héng (橫), or "Horizontal"
  7. * Li's name: Yù Àn (玉案), or "The Jade Table"
  8. * A straight horizontal line
  9. (弩 or努), or "Crossbow"
  10. * Li's name: Tiězhù (鐵柱), or "Iron Pillar"
  11. * Also known as Tiěchǔ (鐵杵), or "Iron Staff"
  12. * A straight vertical line
  13. (剔), or "Picking off"
  14. * Also known as (趯), or "Leaping"
  15. * Commonly known as Gou (鉤), or "Hook"
  16. * Li's name: Xiāzhuǎ (蟹爪), or "The Pincer of Crab"
  17. * A hook to the left
  18. (策), or "Horsewhip"
  19. * Also known as Tiāo (挑), or "Lifting off"
  20. * Li's name: Hǔyá (虎牙), or "The Tiger's Tooth"
  21. * A tapering horizontal line thinning toward upper right
  22. Lüè (掠), or "Passing lightly"
  23. * Also known as Piě (撇), or "Slant"
  24. * Li's name: Xījiǎo (犀角), or "The Horn of Rhinoceros"
  25. * A long slightly curvy tapering line thinning toward lower left
  26. Zhuó (啄), or "Pecking"
  27. * Also known as Duǎn Piě (短撇), or "Short slant"
  28. * Li's name: Niǎo Zhuó (鳥啄), or "Bird Pecking"
  29. * A short tapering line thinning toward lower left
  30. Zhé (磔), or "Dismemberment"
  31. * Also known as (捺), or "Pressing forcefully", and (波), or "Wave"
  32. * Li's name: Jīndāo (金刀), or "Golden Dao"
  33. * Thickening line toward lower right, where it is "as sharp as a knife" (hence the name "Dismemberment")
In addition to these eight common strokes, there are at least two dozen modified or completely unrelated strokes.
