Eleanor Coerr was born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan, Canada, and she grew up in Saskatoon. Reading stories was her favorite childhood hobby.
Eleanor Coerr began her professional life as a newspaper reporter and editor of a column for children. She taught children's literature at Monterey Peninsula College and creative writing at Chapman College in California. For the past 25 years, she has been writing children's books, lecturing and visiting schools across the United States and aboard.
Her previous children's books include: Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes (1977, based on the story of Sadako Sasaki, a girl from Hiroshima who died of leukemia as a result of lingering effects from the 1945 atomic bomb attack) and The Big Balloon Race.
