The Electoral district of Ballarat East is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It existed from 1859 to 1927 before being revived in 1992. It includes the eastern side of the city of Ballarat and rural areas surrounding on the northeast, east and southeast. According to the Victorian Electoral Commission, its total area is 3,323 square kilometres.

The district compromises the following suburbs and towns: Ballan, Ballarat East, Ballarat South, Bungaree, Buninyong, Canadian, Creswick, Daylesford, Hepburn Springs, Kyneton, Lal Lal, Malmsbury, Meredith, Mount Clear, Mount Pleasant and Steiglitz.

Industries in the district include agriculture, grazing, mining and timber production.

Since being recreated Ballarat East has been a marginal seat, it was held by Barry Traynor of the Liberal Party until the 1999 election when it was won by Geoff Howard of the Labor Party, who easily retained the seat in 2002 election.

However the contest at the 2006 election is shaping up as an interesting one, the seat is the most marginal of the four seats based around Ballarat and Bendigo and Labor maverick turned Independent Dianne Hadden has announced she will also contest this seat.
