Electoral district of Benalla

The Electoral district of Benalla is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It is named after the town of Benalla and the seat also includes the towns Bright, Mansfield and Nagambie as well as the tourist attractions of Lake Eildon and the Victorian Alps.
The seat was created in 1904 had has traditionally been held by conservative members. The National Party held the seat from 1943 to 2000 when Denise Allen of the Australian Labor Party unexpectedly and narrowly won the by-election caused by former National Party leader and deputy premier Pat McNamara's resignation from parliament after the 1999 election result.
At the 2002 election Bill Sykes regained the seat for the Nationals, seeing off strong challenges from the Liberal candidate Andrew Dywer and Allen herself. Sykes ended up winning with a margin of 1.97%.
