Electoral district of Mildura
Encyclopedia : E : EL : ELE : Electoral district of Mildura
The Electoral district of Mildura is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Situated in the north-west of the state, it is named after the largest town in the electorate, Mildura and also contains Ouyen, Robinvale and Hopetoun.
Mildura was first proclaimed in 1927 and has traditionally been held by the National Party or its predecessors. However at the 1988 election it was won by the Craig Bildstein of the Liberal Party after receiving preferences from the Labor Party.[link] However at the 1996 election Labor preferences were instrumental in Bildstein's defeat at the hands of Russell Savage, an independent candidate.
Savage's victory was the first sign of rural discontent at the Kennett government and he along with two other rural independent members Craig Ingram and Susan Davies brought about the demise of the Kennett government after the 1999 election when they decided to support a minority Labor government.
Mildura is currently very safe for Savage, who won an outright majority (over 50% of the primary vote) at the 2002 election.
