Following WWII, on 18 December 1945, the Eleventh Air Force was redesignated the Alaskan Air Command (AAC). on 1 October 1946 its headquarters moved from Adak to Elmendorf AFB to better manage Alaska's emerging air defense system.
In 1947, Alaskan Command was established as a unified command, with Alaskan Air Command as its air component.
Alaskan Command was disestablished on 1 July1975 and replaced by Joint Task Force-Alaska. It was a provisional organization activated in the event of war or disasters by the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. Alaskan Air Command remained as a U.S. Air Force Major Command. During this period, the commander, Alaskan Air Command also served as the commander of Joint Task Force-Alaska.
The Alaskan Command was reestablished on 7 July1989 as a sub-unified command under the U.S. Pacific Command. The commander of Alaskan Air Command continued to serve as the commander of Alaskan Command. On 9 August1990, the Alaskan Air Command was redesignated as Eleventh Air Force under Pacific Air Forces.
The commander, Eleventh Air Force also serves as the commander of the joint, sub-unified Alaskan Command, and commander of the combined, US-Canadian Alaskan North American Aerospace Defense Command Region.
