Ellon, Aberdeenshire

Encyclopedia : E : EL : ELL : Ellon, Aberdeenshire

Ellon is a town of about 13,000 people in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, approximately 16 miles north of Aberdeen.

Ellon is essentially a dormitory town for Aberdeen and is linked to the City of Aberdeen by the A90 road. The town has been a settlement for hundreds of years. It lies on the Ythan (pronounced eye-than) river, which is one of very few undeveloped river estuaries on the eastern coast of Scotland.

Education and Leisure

The town has three primary schools, all of a high standard of education. The primary schools are as follows: Each of these schools has some form of greenspace as well as a concrete playground. These schools feed into Ellon Academy, the local secondary school which currently has a roll of about 1,200 pupils. However, due to the current trend of frenzied residential development in the area that figure is set to rise. A new school is planned to contain the influx of new pupils, and is expected to be finished by 2015.

Ellon has a community centre, which includes a swimming pool and café. Ellon also has one of north-east Scotland's youth groups, which is centred around the Ythan Centre, a building dedicated to serving the needs of Ellon's teenage population. This facility includes a sound-proofed room where amateur bands can practice in peace. The youth group (which operates under the banner of Ellon Young People's Project) also held regular discos at the local Merc Hotel, however these were discontinued in May 2006 after repeated reports of alcohol and drug abuse by young patrons.

Ellon today

Ellon has benefited from the North Sea oil boom, and like many other towns around Aberdeen, it has become a boom-town. The population seems to know no limits, and as young families seek to escape the hustle and bustle of city life they leave Aberdeen and flock to places like Ellon, Inverurie and Banchory. A house that cost £100,000 in 1980 may only be within reach of millionaires today. The same upwards trend can be seen in all aspects of Ellon life. New shops are opening, housing developments are springing up everywhere and Ellon is becoming one of Aberdeen's main dormitory towns. There is also a thriving Athletics Club based at the Meadows, more info can be found their website (LInk below)
