Eloy Alfaro Delgado (June 25, 1842-January 28, 1912) was president of Ecuador from 1895 to 1901 and from 1906 to 1911. Eloy Alfaro was the leader of the Ecuadorian Liberal Revolution for which he fought for many years since his youth until 1895, when the city of Guayaquil proclaimed him as Supreme Chief of the country and asked him to return from his exile in Panama. The reaction against the revolution was nonetheless very important since the Church and the Conservative Party had strong influence specially in the Andean region. The legitimate government immediately opposed the Liberal army which, conducted by Alfaro, soon reached the capital and overturned it.
He is attributed with separating the church from the state and implementing many political and civil rights like freedom of speech, thought, representation etc. Also was famously killed 1912 in Quito where his body was mutillated and later dragged through the streets. Nonetheless, his liberal-capitalist view prevailed in many ways for many years in Ecuador. Now he is a sort of national hero.
