Eltham, Victoria
Encyclopedia : E : EL : ELT : Eltham, Victoria
Eltham is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. It is a northeastern suburb on the Yarra River and was a popular location for artists in the early 1900s. Eltham is famous for the Montsalvat artist community which built a rustic set of medieval-style buildings in the 1930s. Montsalvat is still open to the public and the centre of a wine and jazz festival each year. Eltham is about 10 minutes' drive from the Yarra Valley wine region.
Located about 20km northeast of central Melbourne, it is one of the 'green wedge' areas that attempt to provide relatively undeveloped, accessible environments within the Melbourne suburban region. These green wedge areas are under constant pressure from developments such as road and freeway expansions. The local member for parliament in Eltham is Steven Herbert.
Eltham's local station (Eltham Station) is located on the Hurstbridge line.
Eltham's postcode is 3095.
