Ely Culbertson

Ely Culbertson (22 July, 1891 - 27 December, 1955) was an American expert on the card game contract bridge. He was born in Poyana de Vervilao in Romania to an American mining engineer and his local Cossack wife. He attended University of Geneva and also L'École des Sciences Économiques et Politiques in Paris. He founded and edited the Bridge World magazine, and wrote many newspaper articles and books on bridge. Later in his life he gave up cards to work for world peace.
