Englewood is a census-designated place in Charlotte County, Florida and Sarasota County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, it had a population of 16,196.

Englewood was also the original name for Vineland, Florida.

Geography

Englewood is located at [26°57′47″N, 82°21′7″W] (26.963038, -82.352016)[Geographic references#1GR1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 33.2 km² (12.8 mi²). 25.5 km² (9.8 mi²) of it is land and 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²) of it (23.38%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 16,196 people, 8,291 households, and 5,206 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 636.1/km² (1,647.6/mi²). There were 10,495 housing units at an average density of 412.2/km² (1,067.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 98.25% White, 0.19% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.49% of the population.

There were 8,291 households out of which 10.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.4% were married couples living together, 5.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 32.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.94 and the average family size was 2.36.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 10.3% under the age of 18, 3.2% from 18 to 24, 14.1% from 25 to 44, 26.0% from 45 to 64, and 46.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 63 years. For every 100 females there were 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.9 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $31,806, and the median income for a family was $38,978. Males had a median income of $26,568 versus $21,242 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $23,462. About 5.5% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.8% of those under age 18 and 4.9% of those age 65 or over.
