Episodic Ataxia Type-1
Encyclopedia : E : EP : EPI : Episodic Ataxia Type-1
Episodic Ataxia Type-1 or EA1 is genetic disorder affecting the peripheral and central nervous system. It is typified by attacks of imbalance and uncoordinated movements triggered by stress or alcohol. These attacks can last from anywhere from a few minutes to several hours.
The disorder is cause by a autosomal dominant mutation to a gene which maps to Kv1.1, a potassium channel expressed in synaptic terminals and dendrites of neurons. Mutations in the gene result in a non-functional channel or a channel with reduced potassium conductance and a prolonged action potential.
