Erie County is a county located in the state of Ohio, United States. As of 2000, the population was 79,551. Its county seat is Sandusky6 and is named for the Erie Indians, whose name was their word for "wildcat". It is home to the popular amusement park Cedar Point. It was formed in 1836 from the northern third of Huron County.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,622 km² (626 mi²). 660 km² (255 mi²) of it is land and 962 km² (371 mi²) of it (59.29%) is water.Adjacent counties

Demographics
As of the census² of 2000, there were 79,551 people, 31,727 households, and 21,764 families residing in the county. The population density was 121/km² (312/mi²). There were 35,909 housing units at an average density of 54/km² (141/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 88.64% White, 8.64% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 1.60% from two or more races. 2.09% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 31,727 households out of which 30.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.70% were married couples living together, 11.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.40% were non-families. 27.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.80% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the county the population was spread out with 24.70% under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 25.50% from 45 to 64, and 15.60% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 95.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.40 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $42,746, and the median income for a family was $51,756. Males had a median income of $39,249 versus $23,697 for females. The per capita income for the county was $21,530. About 6.00% of families and 8.30% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.60% of those under age 18 and 6.80% of those age 65 or over.
