Erotica was the first single from Madonna's 1992 album Erotica.
Song information
It debuted at number five in the Billboard Hot 100, and instead of zooming to number one, as had been expected, it peaked at number three. There is another version of "Erotica" with different lyrics called "Erotic" that came on a CD which accompanied Madonna's book of nude pictures, Sex."Erotica" contains a sample of the 1974 hit single "Jungle Boogie", performed by Kool and the Gang.
The song has been remixed by William Orbit, who would later become Madonna's main collaborator on her 1998 album Ray Of Light and prolific DJs Masters at Work.
Music video
The music video for the song was directed by Fabien Baron and co-starred actress Isabella Rossellini and model Naomi Campbell, among others. The video was the opening number for Madonna's Girlie Show Tour. The music video of "Erotica" was made in conjunction with the photo sessions of her now infamous Sex book. The American MTV aired the "Erotica" music video a total of only three times (all of these in the "safe harbor") due to its highly charged sexual content. This is known as the Album Version of the video.
There is also an Uncensored Version (also directed by Baron) of the "Erotica" music video, which is an alternate video made to promote the song. This video was shot from a different angle than the other one, so on this Uncensored Version Madonna actually appears on nude poses. For some reason, this version of the video is almost ten seconds longer than the Album Version.
The censured version has also aired on Logo, MTV's cable network channel for gays and lesbians.
