Escrick sits at the southernmost limit of glaciation during the last ice age. When the ice retreated, a deposit known as a "terminal moraine" was left behind, in the form of a ridge, and the name "Escrick" is thought to mean "ice ridge", after this feature. An alternative interpretation of the name is "ash ridge", suggesting that the village was first established in an area of ash trees.

Escrick is the family seat of the Forbes Adam family and home to Queen Margaret's School for Girls.
