Estland (Estonian Eestimaa), or the Duchy of Estland (Estonian Eestimaa Hertsogiriik), was a historical province in Northern Estonia, corresponding to Revelia, Vironia, Harria, Jerwia, Rotalia and Dagö.
Estland (Danish Estland) was a dominion of Denmark during Middle Ages. Between 1206 and 1645 Denmark for several periods of time either held claims to, or ruled over, parts of present-day Estonia.
Estland (Swedish Estland) was a dominion of Sweden from 1561 until 1719. Estland was ceded by Sweden in the Treaty of Nystad in 1721.
Estland (Russian Estland) became a governorate-general of Russia in 1710, when it was conquered from Sweden, until April 12 (March 30 Old Style), 1917 when it was expanded to include northern Livonia and after that it corresponded roughly to the present territory of Estonia.
"Estland" is also the name in many European languages for the modern state of Estonia. These include Dutch, German, Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish.
